Special Projects
Morris HEAL (Health Education and Legal): A Medical Legal Partnership of LSNWJ and Zufall Health to address the legal needs of Zufall's patients through the collaboration of healthcare and legal professionals in order to improve health outcomes among underserved and vulnerable Morris County residents.
Morris Family Justice Project: LSNWJ is a partner in the Morris Family Justice Center, which provides a community-wide approach to delivering services to victims of domestic violence. The project is by an LSNWJ attorney and paralegal who provide comprehensive legal assistance to clients of the Morris Family Justice Center, operated by JBWS.
Tenancy Projects: In partnership with the LSNWJ Housing Team, volunteer attorneys, assisted by volunteer paralegals, represent clients in eviction matters at tenancy court.
- The partners in the Somerset Tenancy Project are Merck, Sharp & Dohme; Reed Smith; Sanofi; ExxonMobil and individual private attorneys. The Somerset Tenancy Project is funded by Merck Foundation and Somerset County.
- The partners in the Morris Tenancy Project are Merck, Sharp & Dohme; Drinker Biddle; and individual private attorneys. The Morris Tenancy Project is promoted to its members by the Morris County Bar Association.
Veterans Justice Initiative: VJI is a collaborative project of Merck, Sharp & Dohme, Lowenstein Sandler, PC, Community Hope and LSNWJ through which veterans residing in the Homeless Veterans transition housing program at Lyons are provided legal assistance that helps them remove barriers to be self-sufficiency and independent living.
LIBRE (Legal Intervention Brings Recovery and Empowerment) Project: A collaborative project with the domestic abuse service providers in Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Warren Counties, LIBRE provides comprehensive and coordinated services to assist victims and survivors of domestic abuse. LSNWJ provides legal assistance in matters affecting the client's essential needs, while the domestic abuse service agencies provide case management, counseling, safe shelter, and support groups.
Life-Planning Project: In partnership with the LSNWJ Autonomy Team, volunteer attorneys, assisted by volunteer paralegals, draft life-planning documents for vulnerable seniors and other people in need. The partners in the Life-Planning Project are Merck, Sharp & Dohme; Reed Smith; and individual private attorneys.
Senior Legal Assistance: In cooperation with the County Offices on Aging, LSNWJ provides legal advice, representation and preparation of legal documents for vulnerable seniors age 60 or older. There are no income eligibility requirements for the Senior Legal Assistance Projects, however, the projects target the frail and vulnerable, minorities and impoverished.
Legal Assistance for People Affected by HIV/AIDS: LSNWJ provides legal assistance in matters affecting the client's basic needs to enable the client to live in the community and access the continuum of care. Income eligibility for this program is 500% of the Federal Poverty Level.
TAXI (Tax Initiative): LSNWJ coordinates with the non-profit Taxpayers Assistance Center to provide free legal assistance in connection with federal and state tax disputes, including refunds offsets, innocent spouse relief, earned income credit and enforcement actions (wage execution, liens, levies and judgments).
