LSNJ Summer 2025 Internship Opportunities – Language Services

Legal Services of New Jersey (LSNJ) provides free legal assistance to low-income New Jerseyans for their civil legal problems. Through its work, LSNJ strives to secure substantive and procedural justice for those living in poverty. LSNJ embraces the vision of full access to essential civil legal aid for all economically disadvantaged people who cannot secure a lawyer on their own. This belief in the importance of legal assistance to indigent people stems from an underlying concern with fairness, and a conviction that important legal needs of individuals should be addressed.

AVAILABLE POSITIONS: LSNJ has 1 part-time paid internship with our Language Services Unit (LSU). This position is in-person (NOT remote). Our offices are located at 100 Metroplex Drive in Edison New Jersey, which is within walking distance from the Edison train station. LSNJ is an EOE.

LSNJ LANGUAGE SERVICES INTERNSHIP: Legal Services of New Jersey (LSNJ) seeks an intern to join our Language Services Unit (LSU). The LSU at LSNJ offers interpretation and translation services from and into English, French, Haitian Creole, and Spanish, with limited services in Japanese. The LSU provides interpretation services (verbal) to the case-handling projects at LSNJ and translates (written) materials for LSNJ clients, including pro se resources. We are seeking a Spanish-Speaking interpreter/translator intern to assist with interpretation for LSNJ staff and clients and/or translation of legal education materials and important documents for LSNJ’s client community.

RESPONSIBILITIES & LEARNING GOALS:

  • The key responsibilities of this position will be to provide accurate, complete, and confidential oral and written interpretation and translation from one language to another.
  • Through this internship, the selected candidate will gain firsthand interpretation and translation experience, as well as insight into legal procedures in the state; hone related skills under the mentorship and guidance of LSNJ’s Language Services unit; and gain uniquely valuable experience providing language services to a vulnerable client community.

QUALIFICATIONS & DESIRED MAJOR(S):

  • Degree (or working toward a degree) in translation or graduate-level course work in written Spanish
  • Excellent English to Spanish translation and interpretation skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish
  • Experience in proofreading Spanish texts
  • Familiarity with CAT tools
  • Knowledge of desktop publishing

Deborah T. Poritz Summer Public Interest Legal Fellowship Program

The Deborah T. Poritz Fellowship is a paid public-interest summer program open to students who will have completed their first or second year of law school as of June 2025.

Students placed in this summer program gain experience in a wide variety of legal issues affecting the poor. Activities typically include client interviewing, legal and factual research, drafting legal documents, administrative agency appearances and, for students who have completed two years of law school, court appearances and more in-depth case involvement.
