Melville “De” Miller, Jr., Co-Founder and President of Legal Services of New Jersey from 1972 to 2020, died March 1, 2021. The Melville “De” Miller, Jr. Memorial Fund has been established to honor his commitment to equal access to justice for all and to abolishing racial and social injustice. Donations to the fund will help to underwrite a fellowship for a law student or newly admitted attorney. Initially, the fellow’s work will have an emphasis on challenging inherit biases and structural racism and may involve work with the Poverty Research Institute (PRI). In the child welfare system, De believed that the current system must treat conditions of poverty with individualized services and benefits and eliminate the risk of separation that poor children and families currently face solely because they are poor.
