Deputy Director

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Acts as Director of the program in the absence or disability of the Executive Director.
  • May act as Program Director.
  • Coordinates and supervises the Team Leaders
  • Develops and supervises LSNWJ’ private bar involvement and volunteer programs.
  • Works cooperatively as a member of the Management Team.
  • Reports to the Director as to all responsibilities.
  • Assists the Director in the overall operations of the agency in compliance with the mission of LSNWJ, the policies established by the Board of Director, the regulations established by the Legal Services Corporation and requirements of funding sources.
  • Assists the Director in evaluating personnel, agency, and program performance.
  • Assists the Director in evaluating training needs of staff and Board and providing for relevant training.
  • Assists the Director in setting agency and program objectives and outcomes, and develops organizational structures and functions consistent with those objectives and outcomes.
  • In the absence of the Director, provides advice to the Board of Directors on the establishment, development, and implementation of policy and priorities.
  • In the absence of the Director, communicates the work of the Management Team to staff and seeks staff input on agency policy and procedures.
  • In the absence of the Director, oversees the financial matters of the agency.
  • In the absence of the Director, recruits, hires and oversees the employment of staff and all other personnel matters of the program; responsible for Equal Employment Opportunity Policy, procedures and implementation.
  • In the absence of the Director, maintains the public relations activities of the program, i.e., communicates and establishes contacts and relations with courts, Bar Associations, private bar, governmental agencies and community organizations.
  • In the absence of the Director, oversees all contacts and communications with the press.
  • Participates in committees, task forces, and working groups; speaks to community groups, schools and others about legal rights and LSNWJ services; prepares materials relating to these presentations.
  • Provides training to other legal advocates; prepares materials relating to these presentations.
  • May provide occasional civil legal service to clients and client groups including advice, negotiation, litigation and administrative advocacy pursuant to program priorities and polices.
  • Prepares and submits administrative (e.g., travel) reports as required.
  • Maintains case handler time records on a timely basis.
  • Performs such other duties as may reasonably be requested.

Competencies:

  • Advanced capabilities of technology, including word processing, case database, calendaring and scheduling software, e-mail, Internet and legal software.
  • Ability to maintain an excellent working relationship with all members of the office staff and Board and work in team environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects.
  • Excellent analytical, oral communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to analyze issues, make decisions and effect change.
  • Thorough knowledge of and strict adherence to regulations, ethics, policies and procedures that apply to legal services programs.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of and strict adherence to the Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Working knowledge of and strict adherence to financial standards applicable to non-profits and legal services organizations, trust account rules, internal controls, and anti-fraud procedures.

Requirements:

  • J.D. from ABA accredited law school.
  • Licensed attorney of the State of New Jersey or licensed in another state and committed to seeking NJ Bar admission.
  • Minimum of 8 years experience in public interest law or comparable experience.

  • This is a full-time position.  Time may vary from week to week depending on many factors, and includes all time on professional activities, training, outreach, committee work and administrative duties.
